Nationwide Recall Alert: Trader Joe’s Organic Basil Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

Trader Joe’s Issues Recall for Organic Basil Due to Salmonella Risk

Background on the Recall

Trader Joe’s has initiated a voluntary recall of Infinite Herbs organic basil following reports that the product could be contaminated with Salmonella. The potentially affected product is sold in 2.5 ounce packages and was available for purchase between February 1 and April 6. The recall was triggered after Salmonella was traced back to the product’s supplier, Infinite Herbs of Miami, Florida. This precautionary step was taken after twelve individuals in seven states reported Salmonella-related symptoms, which were linked to the consumption of the contaminated basil.

Although the recall predominantly affects the East Coast, where the majority of the contaminated product was distributed, Trader Joe’s has removed all batches of the implicated basil from its store shelves nationwide. Customers who have purchased this product are urged to either dispose of it or return it to any Trader Joe’s store for a full refund.

The Scope and Impact of the Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), together with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have identified cases in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Symptoms of Salmonella infection, which include fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, typically appear 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. Although most individuals recover without treatment, the infection can be severe and even life-threatening for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Given the shelf life of the product, the FDA has indicated that most of the contaminated basil is likely past its consumption date, reducing the risk of further Salmonella exposure. However, the investigation remains ongoing as health officials work to ensure all affected product is retrieved and no further cases emerge.

Preventative Measures and Consumer Advice

In response to the outbreak, Trader Joe’s has acted swiftly to halt the sale of the affected basil and is cooperating fully with health authorities to trace and rectify the source of the Salmonella. Consumers are advised to check their homes for the recalled basil and to sanitize any surfaces it may have come into contact with to prevent cross-contamination. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of handling produce safely and maintaining good food hygiene practices.

For those concerned about Salmonella or food safety in general, the CDC recommends cooking foods to appropriate temperatures and practicing thorough handwashing after handling raw foods.
